This year, as Prime Minister Anthony Albanese prepares for a special Anzac Day service in Papua New Guinea, we invite you to make your own journey along the Kokoda Trail.
Join ANU historians for a special interview with one of the last surviving Kokoda veterans, Reg Chard. Although over a hundred years old, Reg remembers the campaign vividly, and speaks with courage and intimacy about his war experience. This broadcast retraces Reg’s footsteps along the Kokoda Trail, and reflects on the sacrifice and emotional toll of war. The fifth ANU Anzac Day Broadcast considers the fraught relationship between memory and history. We explore the ongoing trauma from this terrible campaign, recover the moving story of one man’s war and hear how memorials can offer a site for healing.
